Community Waitakere has managed the contract for Te Wai o Pareira (Henderson Creek) since 2005. This encompasses the Lower Opanuku and Oratia streams and Te Wai o Pareira down to the northwestern motorway bridge.
The tidal nature of Te Wai o Pareira provides a wonderful educational opportunity for our groups as the nature of the stream is constantly changing with the mixing of salt water from the harbour with fresh water from the Opanuku and Oratia Streams.
Te Wai o Pareira (Henderson Creek) is an important migratory route for many native fish, such as the adult banded kokopu and inanga. The mangrove habitat is home to the protected banded rail. We have a very active iNaturalist page where we record biodiversity information to increase awareness and understanding of the catchment. We also have a great walk and cycle way which runs along the length of the east side of the creek.
