A Unique Approach 

At the heart of Project Twin Streams is an approach that puts local people at the centre of thinking and action. You can’t repair and restore natural waterways without working with the communities that live alongside them.

The long term engagement of the community is key to the ongoing success of Project Twin Streams. 

With the support of the Waitākere Ranges and Henderson-Massey Local Boards we contract local community organisations Community Waitakere, EcoMatters, MPHS and Te Waipuna Puawai to deliver aspects of the project that the community can participate in.

There are still major water quality issues in Auckland and we are are doing our part to educate our local communities about them. We encourage households to have a more positive effect on the environment, and to use active modes of transport like walking and cycling to improve environmental and personal health. We encourage people to experience the impact of connecting to the natural world around them. Greater awareness and ownership has increased directly because of this engagement.

We often use creative methods to engage people’s hearts and minds in reconnecting with their natural environment and raise awareness of environmental issues. These methods are particularly effective in engaging harder-to-reach groups (including youth at risk) and encourage valuing our waterways, as well as engendering a sense of belonging to and pride in ‘their place’.

Project Twin Streams is proud to be a key part of a wildlife corridor providing native wildlife a safe journey across Auckland from Tiritiri Matangi to the Waitākere Ranges.
