At their latest visit they didn’t just tend their own beds, they also weeded plots belonging to other gardeners. The sun was shining, the tools were out & by the end of the day the whole garden was looking fantastic! 👏

P.S There’s a new way to connect with the Millbrook Edible Garden community: find out what’s happening in the garden, hear about upcoming events and get involved in growing fresh kai by following the brand new Millbrook Edible Garden Facebook page - link in bio 🔗
Bronwyn (from our PTS team at @communitywaitakere) Bronwyn (from our PTS team at @communitywaitakere) and Natasha (from our PTS team at @mphscommunity) recently hosted the Waitākere Free Rangers homeschool group for an inspiring education session at Henderson Park.

Together with a large group of learners ranging in age from 5-16, they explored beautiful Ōpanuku awa, investigating what lives beneath the surface & tested water quality to learn how healthy the stream is & discussed how to help it thrive.

Students and whānau were excited to discover that the awa provides a good habitat for freshwater creatures, including the inanga that they spotted.

“It was great to have such a practical experience in the environment that we were learning about. The children loved testing the water quality and looking at the macroinvertebrates.” — Renda Warner

Thanks to everyone who joined our recent Glen Eden Thanks to everyone who joined our recent Glen Eden Stream Walk & Talk on a gorgeous sunny morning 🌞 to learn more about the Waikumete stream.

Our hardworking #ProjectTwinStreams team at @ecomatters has been collaborating with community on restoring the stream at Ōkaurirahi for more than 15 years!

We loved sharing our favourite spots & chatting about local history, native plants and stream life. A highlight was looking at a 1969 photo of the clay pit at Ceramco Park – swipe to see 👉🏽– from the spot where the photo may have been taken.

Big thanks to participant Jenn for the great pics and to Waitākere Ranges Local Board for their support.

This guided walk was part of @ecofest_auckland – on until 22 April. Find out about upcoming events at www.ecofest.org.nz

After working on their pepeha with @tekawerauamaki, tamariki from Glen Eden Primary have been out exploring their local awa with our #ProjectTwinStreams team at @ecomatters – Pam and Alanah & volunteer Ben.

At Lucinda Community Orchard alongside the awa, their hands-on learning included:
✅ Why healthy streams matter & how we can help
✅ Testing water quality & understanding erosion
✅ Identifying weeds & the importance of mulching
✅ Bringing their pepeha to life by locating their awa in their community

*What did they discover?*
🌡️ Temperature matters – if the water’s too warm, fish can’t survive.
👀 Clarity & chemicals - we can check if the stream is healthy or under stress.
🐠 Fish are key indicators – finding them means a healthier stream.
🌫️ Sediment in water is like smoke in the air – fish can’t breathe properly.
🗑️ Rubbish & pollution – everything on the ground can end up in our waterways. We only want rain in the stream! ☔

This was more than just learning - it was about feeling, experiencing & becoming kaitiaki of our waterways. As Pam from @ecomatters said, “It’s not just saying the word awa in their pepeha; it’s about learning how to genuinely care for our awa.” 💙
Today we farewell someone who has made an enormous Today we farewell someone who has made an enormous contribution to #ProjectTwinStreams for nearly two decades! His impact reaches far beyond the streams — many years of collaboration with various schools, community groups, contractors, and especially his dedicated work with students & adults with diverse learning abilities, has left a lasting legacy. Thank you, Simon, for your commitment, care and the deep connections that you built. You will be missed! 💚
