We couldn’t resist sharing a few cute moments fr We couldn’t resist sharing a few cute moments from Glen Eden Primary’s recent session outdoors at Waikūmete Stream with our #projecttwinstreams team from @ecomatters. We really love working with local schools to help tamariki discover & learn to care for their environment. Two classes spent time exploring what lives in the water, learning how important the ecosystem is & got hands-on experience with planting & mulching 💚

Year 9 & 10 students from Middle School West Auckl Year 9 & 10 students from Middle School West Auckland have been hard at work during their Community Learning class with the @mphscommunity #ProjectTwinStreams team. Recently they’ve been tackling the bindweed threatening the Harakeke, Ti kōuka, and other native plants. They also had an insightful session with Zephyr from @communitywaitakere learning how to update their trapping programme & exploring ways to make the traps even more effective. To date this year, the students have trapped: 6 rats, 2 possums and 32 mice all to protect their local environment! 💚
In Term 4 our #projecttwinstreams team from @commu In Term 4 our #projecttwinstreams team from @communitywaitakere has very much enjoyed working with Room 4 from Lincoln Heights School’s Kahukura team for the 1st time. During a classroom workshop students learned about their local awa: what lives in it, how healthy the water is & what we can all do to help protect it.

Then they all visited the awa & carried out water clarity testing to take a closer look at the stream’s ecosystem. They were curious & asked great questions about how to care for freshwater environments.

Their teacher commented: “The whole experience was amazing. My students were engaged and focused on all the activities, including the off-site learning.”

Thanks to Lincoln Heights School for having us. We loved going on this learning journey with you!

15 enthusiastic young people recently joined our R 15 enthusiastic young people recently joined our Rangatahi Rangers holiday programme with our #projecttwinstreams team from @mphscommunity for a hands-on day of environmental learning & fun.

We kicked off with Taipua Kipa sharing his knowledge of native manu 🐦 and showing us some taxidermy examples. Then it was down to Oratia Stream for water testing & examining the biodiversity. A highlight was finding a swimming Mayfly (with an impressive score of 9)!

The rangers also checked out our tracking tunnels finding rat, possum & maybe even hedgehog tracks, and managed to catch a rat and a possum too. After a well-deserved pizza lunch 🍕we wrapped up the day with a fun quiz, complete with native bird toy prizes for our eco-experts!

Year 9 & 10 students from Middle School West Auckland recently gained some ngahere knowledge from Matua Riki. They saw kete and hū (shoes) woven from harakeke and tī kōuka, watched Riki use plants from the bush like mahoe to create friction & spark fire, and listened to the sounds of taonga puoro, including a whale-tooth kōauau 🐋🎶

Bronwyn (from our PTS team at @communitywaitakere) Bronwyn (from our PTS team at @communitywaitakere) and Natasha (from our PTS team at @mphscommunity) recently hosted the Waitākere Free Rangers homeschool group for an inspiring education session at Henderson Park.

Together with a large group of learners ranging in age from 5-16, they explored beautiful Ōpanuku awa, investigating what lives beneath the surface & tested water quality to learn how healthy the stream is & discussed how to help it thrive.

Students and whānau were excited to discover that the awa provides a good habitat for freshwater creatures, including the inanga that they spotted.

“It was great to have such a practical experience in the environment that we were learning about. The children loved testing the water quality and looking at the macroinvertebrates.” — Renda Warner
